What to Do When You Think Someone is Taking Advantage of Your Parents

If you suspect someone is exploiting your parents financially, it is crucial to take appropriate steps to safeguard their well-being. Consider having your parents evaluated by a neurologist to assess any potential mental incapacity, as this is a common factor in instances of elder financial abuse.

Should the evaluation reveal any level of incapacity, whether partial or complete, it’s essential to check if your parents have comprehensive estate plans in place. This includes verifying the existence of financial powers of attorney and advanced healthcare directives. Reach out to the designated power of attorney and apprise them of your concerns regarding potential financial exploitation. If the power of attorney fails to address these issues, take the matter to the probate court in the county where your parents reside and request guardianship and conservatorship for the incapacitated parent(s).
